Major Competitions

Upcoming competitions

In addition to hundreds of local competitions, or “feiseanna,” IDTANA and its member regions host a number of “major” competitions each year, which serve as qualifications for the World Championships. These include the North American Irish Dance Championships (NAIDC) – a week-long international competition – and Oireachtasi, or regional championships, held by each region in North America.

The North American Irish Dance Championships (NAIDC)

Grapevine, TX, USA

The North American Irish Dance Championships are an annual event hosted on a rotating calendar by the seven regions of the IDTANA, with support from the IDTANA. The NAIDC is recognized by the CLRG as a secondary qualifier event for North American dancers to qualify at in order to compete at the following year’s World Championships. The NAIDC adheres to many competitive guidelines set forth by the IDTANA and the CLRG. Dancers must achieve certain qualifications through local competitions in order to be eligible to compete at the event. On average the annual event attracts 3000-4000 dancers annually for a five-day competition held in major convention locations throughout North America, which have in the past included Orlando, Montreal, New Orleans, Nashville, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and Vancouver. The NAIDC is a spectacular event open also to international competitors and is held annually over the July 4th week.

Oireachtas

The Irish word “Oireachtas” means gathering and is used as the title for all Regional Championships held annually by the seven North American regions. The Regional Oireachtas is recognized by the CLRG as the primary qualifying event for dancers to qualify to compete at the annual World Championships the following year. Dancers must qualify to compete at the Regional Oireachtas, and entry is confined to dancers and schools from that specific region. Most Regional Oireachtasi are held in the Fall and in locations convenient for the members and dancers of that region.
